Turn your website into a customer generation machine in one day

Posted by admin

For the last five weeks emails have been flying between Ed Rivis, Paul Green and myself – we’ve been planning a one day event for a certain type of business owner – a technically frustrated one!

You see, a recent survey of business owners at a recent event (and by the way, the ‘overflow’ event we told you about on Friday is now completely sold out as well) the number one frustration is their company website.

The main problems are:

  • Not enough visitors
  • Not enough sign-ups
  • Not enough sales

So Ed, Paul and myself have developed a rather clever marketing system that solves all three problems and allows you to generate enquiries for your business 24 hours a day and deliver them to your inbox.

We’re planning a one-day event to teach 60 business owners how to do this for their business and I wondered whether you could contribute to our planning by telling us what you would like your website to do (that it currently doesn’t), what frustrates you about marketing your business on the internet and what information we could provide to help you.

Please post below and join in the discussion!

I’m in great need of knowledge and information regarding my website please! I look forward to hearing how!

Spencer Wasley 26 October, 2009

Hi, I’m just re-building my website, and would my main interest (as well as all of the comments provided already) is how to keep my website up-to-date. That is, keeping it fresh and providing new information to people on a regular basis including twitter/facebook/etc,. without having to spend everyday updating content. Key questions are how often should it be updated, should it be updated at all, should info. be via Newsletters or focused eMails, are surveys worth it, and the list goes on.

Look forward to what you come up with.

Regards

Spencer

I need information on how to attract more people to my website and to convert them into clients.
I also need to know more about social networking, using videos on websites and pay per click advertising.

Nkem Mpamah 26 October, 2009

My web site is guilty of all; no traffic, no enquiries, no lead – nothing! How can I turn this around Jay?

Tom Nolan 26 October, 2009

A short while ago I knew nothing about running a website. Now I know enough to dabble, making small changes here and there and inching slowly and painfully forward.

We’re getting a steady stream of business through the site but nowhere near enough for the amount of (misguided) work I’m putting in.

I need to learn how do do everything more effectively.

Val Buhagiar 26 October, 2009

I would love some advice to get more traffic to my website. I would love to learn how to do this. I don’t have much time to spare so I would like a course that is easily accessible.

Malcolm Riviere 26 October, 2009

How to drive traffic to my websites and get them to opt in to receive an free information report is my main problem. The initial SEO work gave me some good Google page rankings for my keywords and I’m using article marketing as part of my strategy, but progress is too slow for me. I would love to uderstand how to generate more traffic and improve sign up rates. I want all my sites to run on autopilot where possible. Any help would be gratefully received, particularly with a limited budget.

Keith Grinsted 26 October, 2009

OK, no time to get it right and then no response!!

Michelle Robson 26 October, 2009

Marketing on line is the way to go for our travel business, but how do we drive more traffic to the website and get those customers to book with us. On line marketing is an area we know little about , especially the effective use of google ad words and pay per click advertising. Does this require a big marketing budget which we do not have!

Wendy Shand 26 October, 2009

If you think about the marketing funnel – we have a reasonable number of visitors to our site (always could do better though!) and we have a good conversion rate once we speak to people but we are losing people somewhere in the middle of the funnel. I would really like to sort out our site to improve this loss.

Calisto Brian Muzenda 26 October, 2009

I am frustrated noone seem to be going on my website. How can I make my website known.

Stephen Hobday 26 October, 2009

Dear Jonathan, and Colleagues, I’m delighted that you have had a look at our web site. You will have seen that we make special keyboards which overcome keyboard related pain problems and other disabilities. See some of our thankful user reports. The real problem is that there is no replacement market, (some are still in use 15 years on !) so we have to get new customers every time ! The usual CRM advice is useless. Indeed, I accept that our web site is not too easy to navigate. Susan who designed and looks after it, now has a full time job and can no longer give it the attention it needs. From reading Ed’s advice this week I’ve been thinking of having a small separate site to do frequent updates and promotion. I did seriously consider signing on for your course a few days ago, but as I’m now in the nono age group felt that a younger person would do it better justice. I do, very much look forward to your advice. WBW Stephen.

Bill Goss 26 October, 2009

Hi,

Yes to all of the above. I have bought every book under the sun to set-up my business, the website is the main focus on generating clients, however without deep pockets it is somewhat frustrating.

All the best.

my website is attracting around 100 hits per month, with 70% of them from the USA.
I sell personalised greetings cards so know the market is there due to the competitors advertising on TV.
I need to understand SEO as I feel the people I have paid to help me have not really understood my requirements.
I need to be able to be found on the major sites as my conversion rate for people ordering from my site within the UK is around 1-3

Amanda Richards 26 October, 2009

Search engine optimisation is always sold as “easy” by the numerous calls that I get on a daily basis – but obviously can be costly! How to write eye catching copy and how to use movement in a site to attract visitors to our services.

Richard Assuming 26 October, 2009

Everything you made mention is true and am prepared to upgrade my website to catch more bussinesses

Sophie Breslin 26 October, 2009

I know my site is rubbish. I was very confused about my message when I had it built. I am currently having it re-designed and re-written as I’ve now got clarity on my market, product range and message, although still none of this includes a real call-to-action. The new site will be designed to integrate with Constant Contact, as I have my head around that concept now. Although attracting more visitors and getting up the search engine rankings is still an area I don’t understand. I would love to be taught more, thanks guys.

Debbie Tomlinson 26 October, 2009

Hi everyone, have read comments above and I am another one that needs to drive people to the site, and to actually generate clients, which it has not done so far. I would like a site that is intuitive, interactive and easy to use. So the next move is to change it, with so many ideas and things I want to achieve I need to get it right this time!
I thought everyone would know what a PA did and the meaning of the word virtual – but it seems that I was wrong. I also thought that digital transcription was something that all business owners knew about – wrong again!!!
I look forward to hearing all about it.
Thanks
Debbie

Alan H 26 October, 2009

Hi guys, this site (syriatravel.co.uk) was originially set up as an information site, to enlighten people of the delights of Syria that I have experienced on my several visits.
I was told that seeing no travel agent in the UK were doing tours of Syria, why dont I.
If this was to be the case I thought I would only do it on-line.
So I needed another site built to enable prospective visitors to ’syriatravel’ the ability to book tours etc via a link.
I have now been told that the programme used to construct ’syriatravel.co.uk’ is now obsolete and needs to be rebuilt should I want it to bring it up todate!!
The company I selected to construct the other website:alih-travel.co.uk will not supply me with ‘tutorials’ to enable me to (in the first instant) place graphics and text on the ’sqeeze’ page they expect me to ring them up everytime I want someting added or taken off the site!
This is not acceptable and thus I cannot use the site.
I have cancelled and will be seeking a refund, which they have refused.
However I have commissioning a local web builder who has agreed to my demands, this could take a while so I dont think you will be able to help me at this moment in time, unless you are miracle workers!!
I sincerely thank you for thinking of me because I sure could use some professional help.
Many, many thanks
Alan H

Well, I want to know what special strategy you are going to show for the implementation to generate profit.

John Emery 26 October, 2009

We have had a brochure site for nearly ten years and now do OK with pay per click and generic search but could do better. We are building a new site which will be a resource for architects, designers, builders etc but the general public can access it too. To access the site the user must give their name & email address. I would like to know how to link the two sites, advice on improving the design of our sites, how to use an autoresponder, how to link the sites with a CRM system

Simon Smith 27 October, 2009

Have several sites, all of which are “brochure” sites with simple enquiry forms. We recognise we need to “add more value” to the visitors so that they stay and engage with us, and this is being worked on despite being so time consuming.

How does a website owner create a strategy that is effective and minimizes the development time (and therefore cost) involved?

Would also dearly liked to know how we should prioritise our use of Facebook, Twitter, Linked in and so on, to drive traffic.

What about simple landing page sites? Do they work or is this simply what the “get rich quick” schemes promote for their own benefit?

Many of our customers struggle to select a web design company because they appear to be so expensive. How do you choose? How do you balance cost against quality?

Philip Cumberland 27 October, 2009

I have been working hard to promote the website and am constantly adding content. We are getting reasonable numbers of hits but fewer sales than I need.

Manni Chauhan 27 October, 2009

Yes and I would like to learn how to drive traffice through my web site.

Sofie Witter 27 October, 2009

I would like to explore using social media networks as a marketing tool and also a fool proof way of recording success, google analytics is great but only if you really know how to use it. Can you help with SEO ??

Gemma Skillett 27 October, 2009

As a recruitment consultancy we have a good flow of candidates through the site but we would like to both increase this and have clients coming to us with vacancies. This is a slightly different proposal to your standard pay per click or transactional site so advice would be great.

I am an artist and poet, and I’ve just set up my business selling inspirational black greeting cards and prints using my own artwork and poetry (www. artisanimpression.com). I also plan to work with other ‘artisans’ to make my website a ‘One-Stop-Shop’ where people from all over the world can buy hand-made products from people of African Origin. I would like to know how to use Wordpress to write articles that will generate more hits to my website, and how to get my website to make money for me 24 hrs a day.

My site is a mine of information, and lost of people sign up to the newsletter – but none of them turn into clients, though they seem to find the information valuable!

Annabel McMahon 27 October, 2009

We have a website that is attracting customers from all over the world on a small scale, so the challenge is to scale this up quickly. The basic principles are often complicated by “tecky speak” or web developers who forget about marketing. A simple step by step guide through the basics would be a great help.

Dr. John Calinikos 27 October, 2009

I am starting a website to attract clients who wish to have a “nose job” or medically speaking a rhinoplasty. This is a super speciality that entails special training which is not available in any hospital even in general plastic surgery clinics. The training for rhinoplasty is done only in private practice institutions as the changing the shape of the nose is |THE most complicated of all plastic surgery procedures. For successful results super-speciality training is a must!
The website design must inform and must employ special attractions. Must I pay Google or Yahoo to put me in the fist 10? How does one do that? Any information is definitely a plus!

Dave Amos 27 October, 2009

All 3 main problems are of course my problems also.

Of key importance is – how to convert interest into positive action – an order via an web site.

I am thinking that the economic environment is a big factor at the moment, and also that old fashioned face to face selling would probably work when a web site wont – its easier to turn away a web site!

thanks, dave

Rick Fuggle 27 October, 2009

I am getting hits but nothing more, most of the hits seem to be spammers or people messing about.

Really we need to increase the hits and turn these into sales.

I have tried “pay for click” and found it dreadful.

Sonia Abrams 27 October, 2009

Hi

i am very disappointed with my website and am tempted to have it redone. but need to know how to get more visitors to it and increase sales. the 3 problems you identified are exactly my problem too. before i invest in a new site i want to have the knowledge that will make those problems a thing of the past. also web designers aren’t always knowledgeable on this side of things. the proposed event would be very welcome

Reg Arkinson 27 October, 2009

I have put my web site on hold while I re-consider how to make it work better for me. It was a pure brochure site before, however my business has changed and developed since the original site was set up 6 years ago. Now I want to focus on the Professional Speaking side of my business and I want to know if having video content will attract more traffic and how I can convert it into booking enquiries. Plus, how can I maximize the use of social media like Twitter to bring pre-qualified customers to my site.

Fred Evans 27 October, 2009

I would be interested in this training day.

Stuart Stokes 27 October, 2009

Hi Team,
We have been designing and building our own website since we created our business in 2004. In the main, it has worked well for us as a brochure website and we have approximately 840 people signed on to our lists.
I guess, with our new training developments we are looking at driving more traffic from the (55 ave) per day.
What I don’t want to do, is sit in front of the computer all day. Kind of goes against the grain of what we do.
Keep up the good work.

Stuart

Simon Mogridge 27 October, 2009

Like everyone else, the three problems are mine as well. I offer a fire risk assessment and fire safety training service which is something that all business’s must have but are reluctant to spend money on unless pressured by enforcing authorities. To date I’ve had no leads from my site, only work by word of mouth. I’d like to know how to improve my web ranking and get people to buy my service with confidence. I’ve spent a lot on advertising elsewhere, again with no return, so I need that magic wand that gets results in a cost effective way. Hope you can help.

I have three websites – 2 for specialist services problemsolvingtraining.com, and exhibitionbenchmarking.co.uk and a sales performance consulting site 3r-creative-solutions.co.uk.
I receive good feedback from colleagues (experienced IT and business people). However, I do not generate any enquiries from the sites. I have tried Google adwords, which have turned out to be expensive experiments – including offering free reports, and free training. I get click throughs to all three sites but no follow up enquiries. It would be nice to get my sites on page one of enquiries to save the adwords cost, but even better to actually get people to enquire for services as a result of visiting the site(s) Help, I do not know what I am doing wrong. I have a sales and marketing background and deliver excellent results when I get the work, but do not seem to be able to make the technology work for me.

Hi Jonathan
Just got your e-mail quote [We're running this one-day event twice - once on Wednesday 18th November and once on Thursday 19th November. Both days are in Kensington, London.]

Where abouts is the venue in Kensington? Times?

Unless I can reschedule existing business commitments, it may mean I can’t attend, are you planning to run another event?

Could the event sometime be presented near Birmingham ? It’s a lot more central for the whole of the rest of the country and would save the majority two/three extra hours of travelling, plus extra expense and a whole lot of hassle.

Sandra - Fire n Ice Gemz 27 October, 2009

Hi
I would love to generate more traffic to my site (www.firenicegemz.co.uk)
and convert them into sales – I sell jewellery online along with about 1/2 a million others! The competition is strong. I have been told by several companies that Google will never search on my homepage, but they all come out with different reasons why it isn’t right. I have tried pay per click, but I only have a very limited budget which doesn’t help. The business is part time as it isn’t generating enough sales to buy more stock never mind pay a wage. I have been running about 18 months and feel that no matter what i do nothing seems to work. Help!

p.s. why are the conferences always in London – i live in the North West and don’t drive! – could get the train i suppose – I really need this info.

Cathy Hogg 28 October, 2009

Hi

What brilliant timing ! – I am just about to make a decision to re vamp my site, pay for clicks and all the other expensive stuff that the designers are saying I need…. problem is do I really need to spend all that money – I don’t know the answer?! Your help will be appreciated.
