When I tell audiences that the best investment they could ever make is in themselves, I always back it up by explaining that I spend tens of thousands of pounds every year on my own education, primarily in business and marketing.
As I write this, I’m in the BA lounge at Gatwick about to board a flight to Atlanta to spend two days with Matt Bacak, a very progressive internet marketing expert. My philosophy about these things is if I get one good idea that I implement, it’s worth it; I intend bringing back three or four ideas for my MasterMind Group and will share a couple here too.
On Monday night’s Armchair Seminar, Lisa Temperley emailed in a question about the characteristics of successful business people – she asked me for my top 10. As time is pressing, here’s three:
- In business, the successful people are typically the people who believe in themselves and have just a little bit more confidence than average – now, that doesn’t mean that they are super confident in every area of their life, but when it comes to one thing – say technology, or marketing or selling or speaking in public, they excel. The area in which they are above average in confidence is typically the area that propels them towards success.
- Successful business people are typically good communicators – they can articulate their thoughts clearly, can speak up if necessary and, just as importantly, know when to shut up!
- Successful business people are persistent, but also know when they are flogging a dead horse – they will persistent up to the point all logic says that it’s time to call it a day on a certain project. We all hear stories of people who pull success from the brink of disaster, their house has been remortgaged and they are staring into the abyss… and then it all works at the last moment. There are very few situations like that however and I don’t believe there is too much nobility in becoming bankrupt just to be persistent. It’s a little like playing roulette – you quit when you’re ahead.
With best wishes,
